Neck Spasms - Can It Get Cured Through Chiropractic Treatments?

Neck pain is not something you should ignore, as it can be a symptom of more serious health issues. Chiropractic treatments are one of the many options available to treat neck spasms and other similar conditions.

Muscle spasms, especially in the neck, can be painful and debilitating, interrupting your daily life.

Neck pain is one of the most common health problems, with tens of thousands experiencing it at any given time. The causes are many and varied, but they can typically be categorized as either mechanical or non-mechanical in origin. Mechanical neck pain is often caused by issues within the muscles, tendons and ligaments that support the spine while non-mechanical neck pain is generally due to headaches or other neurologic conditions such as pinched nerves resulting from herniated discs.

There are several causes of neck spasms and multiple ways a chiropractor can help you find long-term relief.

Chiropractors have a variety of tools at their disposal to help relieve neck pain. Manipulation is one of the most tried-and-true methods that chiropractors use when treating patients who suffer from this condition. But manipulation isn’t the only approach they can take. Many patients have seen improvement with other forms of care as well, such as nutrition therapy and cold laser therapy

What Causes Muscle Spasms

Muscle spasms is a common ailment that causes involuntary muscle contractions. A number of factors can cause these symptoms, including nerve damage, lack of oxygen to the muscles and even anxiety or stress.

When someone experiences a spasm, it is usually the result of an injury or strain to the muscle fibers. With time, these injured areas heal and return to their normal state with no interference from additional injuries. Muscle spasms can also be caused by health issues such as arthritis, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis (MS), Alzheimer’s disease and cancer.

There are several causes of muscles spasms in the neck, and multiple things contribute to its development, including:

  • Muscle Fatigue - Excessive stress and exhaustion are the two main culprits behind muscle spasms, regardless of their cause. Muscles are responsible for a lot of the movement you do on a daily basis. They also have other roles, such as absorbing shock and helping with posture. The muscles connect to your bones through tendons and they contract via motor units that begin in your brain. When these muscle groups work together properly, you can accomplish any activity or task without much stress or pain. However, when there is an imbalance between them, it can lead to muscle fatigue and even spasms which cause shooting pains throughout your body.
  • Improper Stretching - Stretching is an important part of any exercise routine and should be done regularly. This can help your muscles stay loose, limber, and flexible. It also helps increase range of motion as well as overall circulation in the body. But if you stretch incorrectly, this could actually cause muscle spasms instead of helping to prevent them.
  • Dehydration - When your body loses appropriate fluid to function, it's unable to cool itself properly, leading to excess heat and muscle spasms. Drink water. That’s it. If you are dehydrated, your body can have all sorts of problems, including muscle spasms and even seizures. The simplest solution to this problem is to drink enough water every day so that your urine is clear or a very pale yellow in color (about six glasses a day).
  • Mineral or Vitamin Deficiency - Muscle spasms are painful, involuntary contractions of muscle tissue. They can be caused by a variety of reasons such as injury or illness. One condition that causes muscle spasms is an electrolyte imbalance in the body. An electrolyte imbalance can be caused by any number of things including: excessive sweating during exercise, diet changes and even certain medications. Being nutritionally deficient, especially in these two areas, can lead to muscle aches, weakness, and general pain in individuals of any age.

How Chiropractors Can Help

If you are experiencing muscle spasms, they can be incredibly painful and difficult to deal with. However, oftentimes these spasms can lead to other problems like headaches or back pain. Luckily there is a way for you to help manage your muscle spasms so that they are not controlling your life anymore.

Getting chiropractic treatment can help mitigate pain long term, reducing its severity and frequency—and here's how they can help:

  • Regular Adjustments - When you receive regular adjustments, it can prevent your muscles from tightening and help you avoid neck spasms which are usually caused by muscle tightness.
  • Suggest Massage Therapy - A chiropractor can also provide an interesting massage therapy that will help to relax your muscles and reduce inflammation caused by cramping muscles.
  • Offer Nutritional Advice  - With so many Americans suffering from neck pain, it may be hard to know if you're in need of a chiropractor. However, there's no shortage of benefits that they can provide- one lesser known being that they can offer nutritional advice.
